These birdseed ornaments are perfect to make and gift for the holiday season. They are easy to make and only take a couple of ingredients. Instead of buying each ingredient, Farmer John’s has pre-made kits available! Stop by the store to pick up yours today.

Supplies:

-3/4 to 1 cup birdseed

-3 Holiday cookie cutters (Lightly greased)

– .25 ounces of gelatin

-Twine

-Holiday ribbon

-Parchment paper

-Small pot and spoon

-1/4 cup boiling water

-Gift box and bags (optional)

Step 1:  Combine half your gelatin packet (.25 ounces or 7 grams) and the water in a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer, constantly stirring the mixture until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Remove the pan from heat and allow it to cool for one minute.

Step 2: Stir in 3/4 cup of birdseed, adding extra as needed until the liquid is absorbed. (Don’t add too much birdseed, or else there won’t be enough “glue” to hold together your ornaments.

Step 3: Place the cookie cutters on parchment paper on a baking sheet.

Step 4: Grease your cookie cutters for easy removal later. Fill each ornament halfway with the birdseed mixture. Lay a loop of twine on the top of the ornament.  Add birdseed on top of the twine, making sure to press down firmly.

Step 5: Allow the ornaments to dry for several hours or overnight. Once dried completely, gently press the ornaments out of the cookie cutters. Add a holiday ribbon, hang on your favorite tree and watch the birds enjoy!

Optional: Gift wrap your ornaments in bags and an ornament box as a gift!

TIPS:

  • If gifting these ornaments, make sure your ornament dries out completely before wrapping. Or else there will be too much moisture and it will start to mold. Gift as soon as possible after the ornaments are fully dry to prevent this.
  • Be careful not to add too much birdseed to the gelatin mixture. If you add too much there won’t be enough “glue” to hold everything together.
