Beauty of the season

holiday houseplants

Holiday houseplants are a symbolic and authentic way to bring nature indoors at Christmas time. They work instantly and magically to get your home looking, feeling, and even smelling like Christmas! By mid-November, Farmer John’s is stocked and ready to go with Christmas poinsettias and holiday houseplants to enhance your home or to offer as hostess gifts. Scroll to explore some of our favorites.

poinsettias

Poinsettias are the most popular holiday plant in the United States with festive colors ranging from shades of red, pink, burgundy, and white. Some bracts are speckled, have colored margins, or curled leaves. Our Fantasy Poinsettias are hand painted in glittering blue, purple, opal, and gold to add some sparkle to your holiday houseplant display. Natives of Mexico, Poinsettias prefer warmer indoor environments, but keep away from hot or cold, dry air drafts. Use to decorate your home or office for the holidays, and continue to care for it as a houseplant year round.

holiday plant care

Most holiday houseplants you find in any garden center at Christmas time prefer to be grown in bright, indirect light with average soil conditions. This includes Orchid, Poinsettia, Amaryllis, Peace Lily, and Christmas (or Thanksgiving) Cactus. Some holiday houseplants can handle small amounts of direct sunlight, however, and also prefer high humidity. This includes Norfolk Pine, Lemon Cypress, False Holly, Frosty Fern, and Bluepoint Juniper. In all cases, it’s good to hold off on applying fertilizer until spring when plants begin growing more actively as daylight lengthens.
